Erasing parts of images
Using product photos in your content helps catch your audience's attention, but sometimes you might have photos with unwanted details and not enough time to take new shots.
Image Studio helps you reuse and repurpose existing photos with tools for removing distractions so your products stand out:
Magic eraser "paints out" unwanted parts of your images, seamlessly filling in the spaces to give an uninterrupted background
Erase foreground removes areas of images, leaving a clean, transparent area
To use these tools, you simply draw a mask around what you want to erase and let Image Studio work its magic.

Using Image Studio's Magic eraser, you can remove unwanted objects from existing images, by 'painting out' specific areas and recreating the background that was originally behind those objects.
To erase areas from your images, simply open an image then use Magic eraser to mask and remove the unwanted parts, as shown below:
Here you can see that Magic eraser has redrawn the parts of the photo where the unwanted objects used to be.
Magic eraser uses our AI services to recreate backgrounds, so you'll spend credits when you use it. The number of credits you'll spend is displayed on the "Magic erase" button. See Image Studio credits
Erasing from layersLink copied!
When you use Magic Eraser on images with more than one layer, drawing a mask across different layers will prompt you to choose which layer to erase from. More about Image layers.
Here's an example, where we've replaced an image background, as a result the image has a background layer and a foreground layer, that's highlighted below:
We want to remove a distraction from the image, so we use Magic Eraser to draw a mask. You can see that the mask (shown below) overlaps the foreground image (that's highlighted in the image above).
When a mask spans different layers, Image Studio will ask you to confirm which layer you want to erase from.
If you draw your Magic Eraser mask clearly over only one layer, Image Studio will automatically erase from that layer without asking for your confirmation.
In this example, we've chosen to erase from the background layer, leaving the foreground layer untouched:

You can use Image Studio's Erase foreground to remove areas of images to leave a clear transparent area. This is particularly useful for erasing unwanted objects that are left behind after removing or replacing an image's background.
To remove foreground objects and leave transparency in their place, use "Erase foreground" to draw a mask around what you want to remove.
Here's an example, where we've replaced the background image and want to feature only some of the remaining objects from the collection. We've masked the foreground items that we want to remove.
In this example, a background layer already exists, as a result of using replace background. This means we don't need Magic erase to redraw the background when items are erased.
Erase foreground removes the masked items and leaves a transparent area, revealing the underlying background image underneath.
Erasing foregrounds from images with transparent backgrounds doesn't require AI services, so doesn't use any Amplience credits.
Tips for erasing objectsLink copied!
- You don't have to be exact when highlighting what you want to remove, just make sure that the area to be erased is completely within the mask you draw, and Image Studio will do the rest for you
- Use the "Fill enclosed shapes" option to quickly draw an outline mask that is automatically filled in for you
- You can correct any masks you draw by using the "Correct mask" mode to change the boundaries of the mask
- For best results with Magic erase:
- Try to draw each mask over an area that has a consistent background color. For example, try not to draw a mask that spans a sandy beach and a blue sky
- For backgrounds with a pattern, draw a larger mask to help the AI identify the pattern
